Często pojawia się u Wesa Andersona, np. w jego „Grand Budapest Hotel„. To właśnie za ścieżkę dźwiękową do tej produkcji Desplat otrzymał swojego jedynego jak dotychczas Oscara. Co ciekawe, tego roku nominowany był w swojej kategorii aż dwa razy – także za muzykę oryginalną do „Gry tajemnic”.
